THE JOHN S. KNIGHT HOUSE

A History Still in the Making

The “House that Jack Built”

Built in 1922, the former home of John S. Knight, a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper publisher and editor, is situated on what was once known as Millionaire Row. The two-story, six-bedroom house had the finest trappings of the era:

  • spiral staircase

  • two kitchens

  • music room

  • four fireplaces

  • four bathrooms

  • two porches

After the untimely death of John's wife, Katherine "Kitty" Knight, in 1929, he left the house and never returned. While the house had many owners throughout the years, the sprawling property sat vacant and blighted for at least 15 years. In 2020, the Summit County Land Bank purchased the 3,822 square foot house and embarked on a two-year journey to restore the “house that Jack built”. Great care was given to preserving the house's history while honoring the neighborhood as it is today.

A New Beginning

In June of 2022, The Summit County Land Bank celebrated its 10th anniversary with the grand opening of the restored John S. Knight House. The house, fitted with both classic and modern touches, is now the home of the Summit County Land Bank. The restored house now includes more than 6,700 square feet of space, 13 offices, 4 working fireplaces, and artwork purchased from local artists.

Looking ahead, The Summit County Land Bank is excited to execute plans for public greenspace and a walking path, and the extension of the sidewalk to create a walkable historic corridor. In addition, as part of its overall neighborhood investment strategy, The Summit County Land Bank seeks to engage residents and community leaders to discuss the potential need for additional neighborhood investment and possible solutions.

The house is also open for tours and use by other area non-profits and community members. This further allows the property to be utilized by more people and turns this historically significant building into a community asset.
